Joondalup Health Campus takes out National Award for Sustainable Waste Management
Nov 21, 2025
Joondalup Health Campus’ Environmental Services Waste Management team have taken out the Hospitality in Healthcare Award’s National Sustainability Award for 2025.
The achievement follows on from their win in the WA Hospitality in Healthcare Sustainability Awards, both awards bearing testament to the team’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability as part of Ramsay Health Care, which has a global sustainability strategy focused on caring for our people, caring for our planet and caring for our community.
Environmental Manager Amit Chauhan said over the past five years JHC has made significant strides in reducing its environmental impact by maximising the diversion of waste from landfill.
“Through a range of initiatives and the successful implementation of 30 distinct waste streams, the hospital has achieved an impressive 44 per cent diversion rate in the first half of 2025,” said Amit.
“The goal is to reach 50 per cent by 2026, a target that reflects our campus’ strong commitment to sustainability.”
The achievement has been driven by a dedicated team, including JHC Waste Management Supervisor Jodie Mallia, who actively work to find alternative disposal options to landfill.
“For over seven years we have donated surplus food to OzHarvest, a food rescue charity which supports those in need in our community, and we phased out single use plastics in catering prior to it being mandated in Western Australia,” said Amit.
“More recently, a dedicated stream for single use ECG cables and wires was introduced in JHC’s Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Departments, further expanding the hospital’s recycling capabilities.”
While the award officially recognises the Environmental Services Waste Management team, it is the broader JHC team’s support for, and participation in the initiatives that make them successful.
“It has taken a long-term, collaborative effort to achieve this noticeable shift in staff engagement and compliance,” said Amit.
“We are extremely proud.”
