JHC midwife strives to make birthing experience positive for every family

May 05, 2023

Empowering women and making child birth a “beautiful” and positive experience are the key reasons Joondalup Health Campus’ (JHC) Lauren Burrell chose to be a midwife, along with her love of babies.

Since starting in the Ramsay Nursing and Midwifery Graduate Program in 2020, Lauren has helped deliver over 100 babies and cared for countless women during their pregnancy and after birth.

“The job of a midwife is varied and ranges from providing antenatal checks on the mother and baby, supporting and caring for them through labour and birth, and providing support with breastfeeding and mother crafting postnatally,” Lauren said.

“It is a great honour and privilege to be able to be there and care for these families at such a special time for them,” Lauren said.

Lauren said that although being a midwife was incredibly rewarding, it wasn’t without its challenges.

“In any clinical role, you come under pressure at different times, particularly if it is a really busy day or a patient is experiencing some complications,” Lauren said. “But that’s when being a team player is important. The team at JHC is very supportive…we all help each other and work well together,” she said.

Lauren said the key to being a good midwife was to be caring and supportive.

“Every woman is different, each have their own needs and wishes so it is important to build a great relationship with our women in order to understand and respect these to provide the best care.”

“You also need to be trustworthy, empathetic and be relatable to women” she concluded.
