Faces of Joondalup - Lola Browne - Food Services Assistant

Mar 03, 2025

Food Services Assistant Lola Browne loves her job delivering freshly prepared meals for patients at Joondalup Health Campus.

In 2007, Ms Browne immigrated to Western Australia from South Africa and also made a decision to change careers from insurance broking to catering.

“I was provided on the job training which covers food safety, allergens, speech pathology and dietetics and we are required to do annual refresher training,” said Ms Browne.

“I am proud to be part of a team that is passionate about maintaining the highest level of food safety and taking care of our patients. It’s gratifying to pour my heart into my role and feel I have made a difference to patients at the end of my day,” she said.

A high degree of attention is required to ensure that patients not only receive their correct meals and at the right temperature for food safety, but that their meal is also in accordance with any dietary restriction.

“We check if the patient has any food allergies and, at every meal delivery, carry out a three point check to ensure correct patient name, correct diet and that they have no food allergies.

“We also serve snacks, hot and cold beverages and provide prescribed dietary supplements.

“We make sure that the patients are capable of opening the food packaging and can reach the items on their tray and liaise with nursing staff where any issues are identified,” said Ms Browne.

Ms Browne encourages anyone interested in a role in catering at JHC to apply.

“I love the staff here. We're all very passionate about serving good food, food safety and taking care of the patients and we’re supported by great managers and supervisors.”
