Biggest single intake of new nurses in Joondalup Health Campus’ history

Nov 21, 2025

Joondalup Health Campus has taken an innovative approach to recruiting more nurses to meet the hospital’s growing requirements and on-boarded a record 48 nurses in one day.

The group includes enrolled nurses and registered nurses who have extensive experience in non-hospital settings, such as GP clinics and nursing homes, will be closely supervised while they undergo training during their transition to a hospital setting.

JHC Acting Director of Clinical Services Shane Tobin-Longly said the Professionals Pathway Program was a Ramsay Health Care initiative design to attract and support nurses who wanted to work with more acutely unwell patients.

“The nurses have extensive and valuable experience caring for patients, and we provide intensive training to upskill them over the course of three weeks and then provide ongoing support on the wards via their managers and staff development nurses,” said Shane.

Their first week is filled with lots of in-class education sessions and simulation exercises to experience scenarios that they may not have experienced before and then they move to the wards where they are supernumerary and will shadow an allocated nurse on the ward,” she said.

Joondalup Health Campus is rapidly expanding; 60 new public beds are due to be completed mid-next year as part of the $307.9 million expansion funded by the State and Australian Governments, and an extra 52 beds are due to open in the Ramsay Joondalup Private Hospital following its $190 million redevelopment. It will take the total number of beds on site to more than 900.

Ms Tobin-Longly said the Professional Pathways Program was one of several career development programs offered at JHC that sought to attract staff and help them achieve their career goals.

“We have provided permanent contracts to 79 graduate nurses this year who are participating in our two-year Graduate Pathways Program and celebrated the first JHC graduates this year in the Ramsay Enrolled Nurse (EN) to Registered Nurse (RN) Transition Pathway,” Ms Tobin-Longly said.

“These are among many ways JHC supports its nursing staff to pursue their professional ambitions, and for us to remain competitive in a very challenging job market.”
