Perth's newest hospital opens to patients

Mar 13, 2013

Joondalup Private Hospital - the first new hospital in Perth's northern suburbs for more than 30 years – is now open.

Ramsay Health Care's newest hospital is located on Joondalup Health Campus overlooking Lake Joondalup. The 145-bed facility offers an extensive range of inpatient services including obstetrics, surgery, interventional cardiology, medical and acute aged care across five levels.

"Joondalup Private Hospital is set to transform health care options for people living in Perth's northern corridor," said Chief Executive Officer Kempton Cowan. "Patients with private hospital insurance can now access specialist medical and surgical care in our standalone private hospital. They now have a real alternative to travelling 30kms into the city for treatment."

Joondalup Private Hospital is located adjacent to the existing public hospital – also managed by Ramsay Health Care - providing access to the emergency department, operating theatres and intensive care facilities.

"Unusually for a private hospital, we treat patients requiring emergency or planned care. Patients admitted via the emergency department can elect to be admitted to their own room in the private hospital," said Mr Cowan.

"Operations are performed in one of 12 state-of-the-art theatres opened last year. We also have 15 intensive care and high dependency beds to cater for patients who are seriously ill or are recovering from major surgery."

Joondalup Private Hospital has been built and designed to Ramsay Health Care's highest standards with almost all of the 145 beds in single rooms.

"We've put a lot of thought into design, layout and finishes to ensure patients are as comfortable as possible," said Mr Cowan. "The obstetrics department includes rooms with double beds to enable partners to stay the night following the birth of their baby. Patients have access to gardens and terraces. The aged care facilities include a hospital 'granny flat' to help patients make the transition from hospital to home."

Kevin Cass-Ryall, Ramsay Health Care's WA State Manager, said the opening of the new hospital demonstrated the group's commitment to meeting the needs of Western Australians.

"Joondalup Private Hospital is located in one of the fastest growing regions of Australia. The opening of this new hospital is part of our commitment to ensuring people living in Perth's northern suburbs can access the best private hospital care near to where they live."

Ramsay Health Care now operates four private hospitals in Western Australia – Joondalup, Hollywood, Glengarry and Attadale Private Hospitals. It also treats public patients at Joondalup Health Campus as part of a long-standing public private partnership with the WA State Government.

The private hospital is the latest project to be delivered as part of the $393m redevelopment of Joondalup Health Campus funded primarily by the WA State Government and Ramsay Health Care.
