New option slashes cost of private maternity in WA

Dec 22, 2020

The out-of-pocket cost to give birth privately has been slashed – in some cases to zero* - at Joondalup Private Hospital with the introduction of a new maternity option.

Head of Obstetrics & Gynaecology Dr Cliff Neppe said the new Peace of Mind maternity package would be the most affordable private option in the West Australian market.

“Care during a woman’s pregnancy, birth and postnatal period can be largely - or even entirely - covered by insurer HBF, private maternity provider ‘One For Women’ and Joondalup Private Hospital,” he said.

“Eligibility for this package depends on clinical criteria such as the mother being classed low-risk and having an uncomplicated pregnancy.”

Dr Neppe said patients insured by funds other than HBF would have a known reduced out-of-pocket expense ranging from $990-$1200.

“We know lots of patients with private health insurance don’t use it because they fear the out-of-pocket costs are going to be too high.

“This offer provides financial certainty and goes beyond covering the usual costs of private obstetrics care.

“There are some providers who will just cover the cost of the women’s pregnancy care, but Joondalup Private Hospital is currently the only hospital in WA ensuring the entire journey – including in-hospital delivery and post-delivery - is covered,” he said.

“This option provides limited or no-out-of-pocket expenses for the other associated costs that can be incurred - like ultrasounds and epidurals.”

Choosing this package, women will be cared for by a collaborative maternity team, comprised of specialist obstetricians, GP obstetricians, midwives, allied health and mental health professionals.

For women with private insurance who prefer the traditional model of obstetrician-led care by their doctor of choice, this remains available.

Whichever option parents choose – either the traditional or the Peace of Mind maternity package – they will have access to the new Little Luxuries offer, which includes up to two nights at the Quest Joondalup, where parents can bond with their newborn in stylish, peaceful surrounds whilst having hospital help close at hand.**
