Kind and calm, Kura Gilmour, has far reaching influence

May 12, 2023

Kura Gilmour, a Clinical nurse at the hospital’s aged care and rehabilitation ward (D0), started out as an enrolled nurse in New Zealand’s Hawkes Bay area in 1974.

Following relatives to Perth, Kura and her husband moved to Quinn’s Rock in 1998 prompting her to apply for a job at Joondalup Health Campus soon after.

Initially Kura worked as an enrolled nurse at JHC, however, she undertook further study to transition to a registered nurse and secured a position in aged care and rehabilitation.

Kura says work is her “safe place”.

“There is nothing I don’t like about it,” she said. “I particularly like working with older patients and their families and making sure the holistic environment is conducive to healing.”

Kura said one of the highlights in her career was caring for a patient with severe dementia.

“I was the only person she seemed to recognise and respond to making me feel like I made a difference in her life,” Kura said.

Kay Turner, Clinical Nurse Manager said Kura was an “absolute gem” and that she felt a sense of ease and pride when Kura was on shift.

“Kura is kind to everybody and remains calm under pressure,” Kay said. “When she is coordinating she runs the ward like clockwork.”

“She is incredibly thorough and always pays attention to detail, making sure patients have everything they need,” she said.

Kay said Kura had a lovely bedside manner and was the “ultimate role model” for junior nurses.
