Joondalup Health Campus’ Dr John Zorbas named 2015 Junior Doctor of the Year

Aug 27, 2015

Joondalup Health Campus’ Dr John Zorbas has been named the Australian Medical Association’s 2015 Junior Doctor of the Year.

In receiving the ‘Dr Camille Michener Legacy Award’, Dr Zorbas was recognised for his significant and outstanding contribution to the medical profession and the community in areas such as teaching and education; leadership and advocacy; and doctor’s wellbeing and community service.

Working at Joondalup Health Campus since 2011, Dr Zorbas is currently employed as an Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine Registrar. A natural leader and Co-Chair of the AMA WA’s Doctors in Training (DiT) Committee, Dr Zorbas is a dedicated and hardworking junior doctor, whose advocacy for safe working hours and leave provisions has resulted in significant improvements to junior doctor rostering in public hospitals.

Dr Zorbas said of the win “It was a lovely surprise. We don’t do what we do for the recognition, but it’s always nice when your peers congratulate you.

“I’m privileged to work with such a great group of staff and I’m privileged to work in a job where people let you into their lives to help.”

The award was presented at the AMA’s Gala Dinner and Charitable Awards Ceremony, which is held annually to recognise great achievements in health leadership and medical research.

AMA (WA) President Dr Michael Gannon said it was a “true honour to present the awards to West Australians who have had such a tremendously positive impact to health care in our state.

“It is through their often thankless efforts that we get to live in one of the healthiest parts of the world,” he said.
