Oct 18, 2022

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Paul Ramsay Foundation, Professor Kristy Muir, has met with Ramsay Health Care WA and Joondalup Health Campus (JHC) leaders and researchers to explore new research opportunities and hear about the hospital’s research vision.

During Professor Muir’s visit, current research projects were discussed along with novel ideas for research which could improve health across the life span.

JHC’s newly appointed inaugural Director of Research, eminent professor of paediatrics and co-founder of the ORIGINS project, Professor Desiree Silva, said while the hospital was already doing some amazing work, its vision was to grow in the area of research.

“There are 21 clinical trials and more than 130 research projects currently underway at JHC across more than 20 specialties, and involving more than 2,500 participants,” Professor Silva said.

The Paul Ramsay Foundation co-funded the landmark ORIGINS study, a collaboration between JHC and the Telethon Kids Institute aimed at improve child and adult health.

The project has put JHC on the world research stage by recruiting 10,000 children and following them over 10 years, starting in the womb.

Other research was also showcased, including ResApp and HeraCARE. Both projects use innovative medical technology to improve the way services are delivered – one in respiratory medicine and the other in maternity care.

JHC CEO Dr Amanda Ling said she was excited by the work being undertaken, and was pleased to share JHC’s developments with Professor Muir.

“Now we have Professor Silva on board driving our research capability by identifying, developing and sourcing funding for research activities I think we can expect to see exciting developments in this area,” she said.

“The ultimate goal, of course, is to improve patient outcomes”.
