Faces of Ramsay - Dr Sharon Chu

Mar 08, 2024

This International Women’s Day, JHC’s Dr Sharon Chu says any of the gender-related challenges she faced on her road to becoming a surgeon only fortified her resolve and determination, and she says it’s up to all women to pave their own way.

Singapore born Dr Chu graduated from the University of Western Australia in 2003 and qualified as a plastic surgeon in 2014.

In 2016, Dr Chu became the first graduate of the Australian Hand Surgery Society, qualifying her as specialised hand and wrist surgeon, living her own advice to embrace challenges, break through barriers and be a trailblazer.

Her comprehensive training equips her to provide expert care in plastic surgery, including skin cancer management, with a particular focus on intricate hand and wrist procedures.

Working at JHC since 2015, Dr Chu’s role now also includes the education and training of upcoming surgeons and Resident Medical Officers.

“I firmly believe that adversity is not a reason to give up; instead, it's an opportunity to prove one's resilience and capability,” said Dr Chu.

“My message to other women aspiring to enter male-dominated fields or any challenging career path is this: keep your vision and goals in mind,” said Dr Chu.

“While it's true that others may not always make your journey smoother, it's up to you to navigate through obstacles and pave your own way.

“Inclusion starts with each one of us, and by staying true to ourselves and our ambitions, we inspire others to do the same regardless of differences.”
