Faces of Joondalup – Redevelopment Coordinator Andrew McMurdo

Feb 24, 2023

Redevelopment Coordinator Andrew McMurdo works right at the coalface of the Joondalup Health Campus (JHC) expansion project.

Officially known as the 'JHC Development Stage 2’, the $256.7 million project is a complex and multi-staged, and is jointly funded by the State and Commonwealth Governments, of which the Commonwealth has committed $158 million under the Western Australian Hospital Infrastructure Package.

Part of the 2021 – 2025 development is a new 102-bed Mental Health Unit due for completion later this year, and it sits firmly front and centre in Andrew's busy schedule.

While Andrew has been with JHC since July 2010, his local pedigree has much deeper roots. Andrew's mum Alice McMurdo worked in the Emergency Department for almost 30 years, starting in 1987 and retiring in 2016. Alice maintains regular contact with her old work colleagues and loved working at JHC.

Another now-retired Wanneroo Hospital and JHC stalwart whose career also has a daily influence on Andrew is Jim Lynton. Andrew says, "Jim commissioned the hospital before it took patients. He was integral to the master plan development of the site that we are continuing to follow, and his foresight has allowed us to grow while maintaining operations."

During his 13-year tenure, Andrew has held roles in Engineering and Workplace Health and Safety (WHS). JHC has supported Andrew's professional development by being part of the initial Emerging Leaders program, and he now holds several qualifications, including in WHS, Training and Assessment and Project Management.

‘To grow with the community’ is a key part of the hospital's vision, and being part of that community provides valuable insight.

Andrew says, "Living locally, I'm extremely proud of JHC and the service we deliver, and I hope that with the redevelopment, we can continue to improve and offer the local community even more services that they require."

And finally, when asked what makes him enjoy working at JHC, Andrew said: "The people are invested in their work and where they work. It certainly makes my life easier having colleagues who want the best for themselves and the community."
