Our Staff: Our Educational Opportunities
Nursing Programs
Undergraduate
Our trend in providing increasing opportunities for clinical practice to nursing undergraduate students has continued to highlight the significant contribution that Joondalup Health Campus makes to their education.
Partnerships and affiliations with metropolitan, country and interstate universities as well as local TAFE Colleges and private providers has seen JHC continue to support undergraduate students of nursing, allied health and medicine in gaining their practical experiences. Based on 2009 student allocations and current capabilities, JHC can accommodate approximately 490 undergraduate nursing students per annum from across all years and all tertiary education facilities.
As part of the affiliation agreements made between JHC and the individual tertiary institution, clinical facilitators must accompany the students on clinical practice. Whilst most institutions are following the concept of a mentor &/or preceptor for each student, the use and accessibility of a clinical facilitator has proven to be an important component of clinical practice. Each facilitator not only assists students with a multitude of practical applications they also facilitate learning, problem-solve, assist staff and are an on-site contact and support person should the need arise. To enhance this support, many JHC employees work in joint roles with the tertiary institutions as facilitators for the students.
We also ensure that a comprehensive orientation is provided to all students who are placed on our campus to ensure they are familiarised with the culture and expectations of the hospital environment.
Partnership programs are encouraged and supported, these programs are agreements with tertiary institutions where chosen students are allocated all their clinical placements at JHC. This program ensures continuity in experiences and increases the learning time available to the student as they do not need to orientate themselves to new environments and processes each time they are on practical placements. We currently have a partnership program with ECU which has expanded from the initial seven students in the pilot program to an intake of 18 this year.

Enrolled Nurse Registration Pathway Program
The Enrolled Nurse Registration Pathway Program was formulated through a partnership between the Western Australian Department of Health, the Nurses and Midwives Board of Western Australia and Edith Cowan University School of Nursing, Midwifery and Postgraduate Medicine. This program was developed to provide an employment pathway for undergraduate nursing students to enter the workforce as enrolled nurses.
To support this program, JHC has offered employment opportunities with a structured transition program to a group of undergraduate nursing students who completed the requirements for registration as an enrolled nurse with the Nurses and Midwifery Board of Western Australia. After evaluations were completed, this program has now been fully implemented with our initial pilot intake of six in November 2007 increasing for a further intake in November 2008. This pilot group of six undergraduate nursing students will complete their degrees at the end of 2008 and, due to the success of the program, were offered direct entry into our Registered Nurse graduate program for 2009.
