Our Staff: Our Educational Opportunities

Education & Research

Ensuring the provision of safe quality care to our community is a priority for all health care providers. Providing educational opportunities that support meeting the needs of the health consumer along with meeting the needs of health care providers is a priority for the Education and Research Unit at Joondalup Health Campus. Supporting our staff and local health care providers with access to education and research opportunities enhances their knowledge and promotes the use of contemporary, evidence based practice.

The role and purpose of the Education and Research Unit is to facilitate the development, implementation and evaluation of ongoing comprehensive education programs and provide professional learning and development opportunities to all staff members within the organisation.

Our Philosophy
To provide excellence in education and research by fostering, supporting and maintaining a positive learning culture throughout the organisation.

We have a dedicated team of staff educators in our central department and staff development nurses located within ward areas who provide supported learning opportunities to all staff ranging from new starters to experienced practitioners facilitating growth and development in their careers of choice. We are a team of senior nurses with varying clinical knowledge and education experience. All members of this team hold relevant education qualifications ranging from Certificate IV in Training & Assessment to Masters of Health Education.

Nursing research
Promoting nursing research and practice development is important at Joondalup Health Campus. Through our collaboration with Curtin University and the established joint appointments of Nurse Research Consultants within the campus we continually support research opportunities throughout the campus.

Nurse Research Units function within all clinical areas of the hospital with membership encouraged and open for all staff. With the guidance of the Nurse Research Consultants and other colleagues, staff are supported in developing research proposals and conducting research; as well as implementing and evaluating research initiatives within their clinical areas. Presentation and publication of research findings is promoted in order to share our outcomes with the wider health community.

Our Aim is:
All Nursing staff at JHC will have the opportunity to be involved in nursing research activities in all clinical areas resulting in improved staff engagement, nursing care, nursing performance and patient experiences.

During 2007, the Ella Lowe Nursing Scholarship was awarded to Beverley Ewens in the Critical Care Unit to research ‘Patient Diaries in ICU – do they improve the wellbeing of patients and their families’.

The Ella Lowe scholarship is provided by Ramsay Health Care in honour of Ella and her achievements over her career. This scholarship is for up to $10,000 and permanent Ramsay Health Care employees who have been employed by for at least 12 months are eligible to apply.
