Our Community: Environmental Initiatives
Environmental Initiatives
JHC has a waste and environmental committee (WEC) that meets monthly to discuss issues relating to the management of waste at the hospital.
The WEC consists of key staff members, plus representatives from SITA (the company that transports and disposes of our waste) and Tamala Park (where the waste is taken).
The WEC was responsible for setting up the aluminium can recycling bin in the staff dining area and using kitchen waste and recycled paper for the worm farm.
The WEC is also investigating further ways to reduce the amount of waste that JHC produces, including:
- Recycling Kim Guard (sterile instrument wrapping) in theatre
- Recycling batteries from pagers
- Recycling used fluorescent light globes and tubes.
JHC also has other environmentally sound initiatives including:
- A reduction in waste
- Responsible waste disposal eg. recycling, worm farm
- Water conservation
- Energy conservation
- ‘Travelsmart’, which supports alternative transport solutions
