SEPTEMBER 2016 – Channel 7’s Today Tonight
‘Broken Heart Syndrome’
When Perth grandmother Margaret Walkerden saw her husband of 44 years suffer a heart attack, it triggered pain in her chest. Margaret was experiencing ‘takotsubo cardiomyopathy’ commonly known as broken heart syndrome. Dr Jenny Deague, JHC’s Director of Cardiology, said the condition was caused by a sudden rush of adrenalin with symptoms very similar to a standard heart attack.

‘Hospital Wins Look Good Award’
The effect cancer treatment has on a
patient’s appearance only adds to the
stress of an already daunting experience.
JHC was recently recognised as a leader in the field, becoming the first WA hospital to win the Look Good Feel Better National Venue of the Year Award.
NOVEMBER 2016 –
BBC’s Wanted Down Under
JHC featured once more in the British TV series ‘Wanted Down Under’ – this time the show focusing on what it is like to work in an Australian Emergency Department (ED). The film crew interviewed ED registered nurse Donna McGrouther and our Director of Clinical Services Ben Irish about the benefits of nursing at JHC.

‘Triple Surprise for Abigirl’
A Joondalup mother was surprised to find
out she was pregnant and even more shocked when a routine scan revealed she would have triplets. Abigirl Damba and Pascal Ntwari already had four children when they found out she was pregnant, and then the 11-week scan revealed three foetuses. JHC obstetrics and gynaecology ultrasound specialist Dr Bridget Jeffery said they were the first set of triplets to be born at the hospital in more than a decade and that triplets were not common in Australia, happening naturally in about one in 8,000 pregnancies.

‘Election Looks Healthy’
Local media reported that there was an entity certain to be a winner in the March election. JHC is set to benefit no matter which party wins. Labor promised $167 million to expand the hospital, several weeks after the Liberals pledged $140 million.
MAY 2016 –

‘Patient Care Improved Thanks to Carol’s Zeal’
The work of JHC Bed Manager Carol Pilcher was highlighted in the local media ahead of International Nurses Day. Ms Pilcher, JHC’s bed manager since 2006, runs workshops with residential aged care workers to minimise unnecessary hospitalisations with topics ranging from wound management to matters such as incontinence and prevention of falls.
