There is an increasing body of research being conducted at JHC in areas as diverse as paediatrics, nursing, dietetics, anaesthetics, cardiology, aged care and emergency medicine.
From student projects to large multi-centre collaborations, more than 40 new projects commenced in 2016-17; several are led
by JHC doctors, nurses and allied health professionals and others are in partnership with local and international universities and collaborative research groups.
JHC has a strong research culture which is underpinned by a collegiate atmosphere and the altruistic desire of all health workers to improve patients’ lives.
More than a hundred research projects are currently underway and, significantly, have resulted in more than 80 peer-reviewed journals. These are well-respected publications considered by experts around the world to have rigor and scientific integrity, and that are replicable.
The importance of these papers is that they translate into bedside practise and therefore help improve patients’ lives and outcomes. Some of the projects currently underway include:
obstructive sleep apnoea (osa) study
A multidisciplinary study led by anaesthesiologists and respiratory doctors, which is investigating whether respiratory support for the patient following surgery helps reduce complications.
the troponin study
A multidisciplinary study led by emergency medicine and cardiology doctors investigating how reliable the two-hour test for troponin (a protein released when heart muscle is damaged) is for assessing whether a patient has suffered a cardiac event, compared to the test routinely done at the six-hour mark.
59
dietetics study
An evaluation of the effectiveness of dietetic intervention in limiting excessive weight gain during pregnancy in high-risk patients in the antenatal clinic.
the Promedica study
Led by doctors working in Intensive Care Medicine, this trial is investigating the use of melatonin in the reduction of the occurrence and severity of delirium in ICU patients. Delirium is a state of acute confusion and restlessness.
