2016-2017 was the start of a new era for JHC training and development with the appointment of the hospital’s first dedicated simulation coordinator, Jon Mould.
Jon is also believed to be the first dedicated simulation coordinator at a WA hospital.
Jon brings with him a wealth of experience, not just as a simulation expert who has worked at Curtin and ECU, but also as a clinical nurse with a background in psychiatry, adult cardiology, paediatric emergency and paediatric intensive care.
Since his appointment in November 2016, Jon has significantly enhanced JHC’s existing simulation activities.
“My goal is to embed immersive simulation into the training and education culture here at JHC, and in turn, improve patient outcomes,” Jon said.
Immersive simulation is about making the exercises “more real”.
The hospital now has a child and newborn mannequin which are more human-like and give participants more information about “the patient’s” condition.
One of two simulation rooms in the Community Clinical School is also now equipped with medical gases. The current AV system is being upgraded so scenarios can be streamed into the facilitators observing the activity from next door.
“This will make it much more real and will reduce the reliance on facilitators who are currently standing in the same room,” Jon said.
“Another way we are bringing these exercises to life is through the inclusion of the Medical Emergency Team (MET).
“This means a real MET call is activated on a ward and the team won’t know until they arrive at the scene that it is a simulated activity being carried out on a mannequin.”
According to Jon, it is about making these scenarios more real in order to enhance learning outcomes, such as teamwork, communication and leadership.

Jon said the realism increased emotional pressure on the participants.
“We know that people are more likely to retain information if they are emotionally affected,” he said.
Jon said these changes, along with an increase in the number of activities being organised, were just some of the initiatives that had been introduced as part of an ongoing improvement program.
