Student Volunteers wanted for Joondalup Health Campus older adults study

Feb 10, 2022

Joondalup Health Campus is recruiting students to volunteer to provide support to patients as part of a research study to improve the outcomes for older adults in hospital.

Edith Cowan University Centre for Research in Aged Care researcher, Dr Rosemary Saunders, said the volunteer role is an excellent opportunity for nursing and other students to gain experience in interacting with patients, families, and staff in a hospital setting.

“Joondalup Health Campus is undertaking a study to determine the effectiveness of using volunteer support and a technology-based pain assessment using PainChek® Universal for older adults in hospital,” Dr Saunders said.

“We are seeking volunteers to provide support for patients in hospital with eating, drinking, exercising, and providing social interactions and activities such as word games, reading newspapers and other cognitive support.

“Training is provided for the role.”

The volunteer role will require a commitment of at least one shift per week either 8am to 1pm or 1pm to 6pm Monday to Friday. Volunteers can choose their own shifts.

Orientation and training for the role will be held over two days: Day 1- Monday, February 21, 8.30am to 4.30pm at ECU Joondalup Building 2 Rm 104 and Day 2 –Wednesday, February 23, 8.30am to 12.30pm or 1pm to 5pm at Joondalup Health Campus.

The volunteer role will start from February 28, 2022 (dependent on your shifts) and will continue for six months and will include a hospital orientation.
